Whooping cough hub

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a contagious disease caused by Bordetella pertussis. The bacteria is found in the mouth, nose and throat of an infected person. It is spread by direct contact with discharges from the nose and throat of infected individuals. Whooping cough begins as a mild upper respiratory infection. Initially, symptoms resemble a common cold, including sneezing, runny nose, low grade fever and mild cough. Within two weeks the disease enters it second stage. The cough becomes more severe and is characterized by episodes of rapid coughs followed by a crowing or high pitched whoop in children. Other symptoms include excessive mucus production and vomiting. Occasionally, edema, hemorrhages and vascular plugs develop in the brain, leading to neurological damage. It is during this second stage that most diagnosis occurs. This stage lasts for four to six weeks.
