Pericarditis is an inflammation of the thin sac that surrounds the heart. The most common viruses causing the disease are enteroviruses while the most common bacteria infecting the pericardium are the pyogenic cocci (Neisseria, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus). Chronic pericarditis is most commonly caused by M. tuberculosis or Histoplasma capsulatum. There is also a noninfectious pericarditis; causes include disease of the underlying heart muscle, injury, and other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, or kidney failure.
